and no-one told me!

New Zealand has pledged to support this - the drawback is that they're talking about finalising the draft over a period of *years*, and once adopted it will be guideline, not law. So let's help the animals a little little bit, our politicians say, just not award them basic rights in law.
My understanding is that the code will be designed for use by those countries that don't already have codes for animal welfare - although there's a hint that it will protect animals in 'developing countries', this also includes the US (so far as farm animamls are concerned).
The campaign is backed by the World Society for the Protection of Animals
